NSFA Development Leagues
2026 Player Selection
What’s happening?
NSFA has introduced a clear process for how players are selected into Development League teams for the 2026 season. This ensures fairness, transparency, and certainty for both players and clubs.
Player Retention
-
If your child played for a club in 2025, the club may invite them back for 2026.
-
To accept, you’ll complete an online Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) form provided by the club.
New Player Trials
-
Clubs cannot trial new players before 1 November 2025.
-
From 1 November, clubs may trial and offer spots to new players.
-
Once offered a place, new players also complete the MOU.
The MOU (Memorandum of Understanding)
-
It’s an online agreement between the player and club confirming a place for 2026.
-
The MOU includes:
-
Player name and details of 2025 and 2026 clubs/teams.
-
Agreement that any selective team fee is non-refundable.
-
Confirmation the player has not already signed with another club.
-
-
The date/time stamp on the MOU is the official confirmation of the player’s spot.
Important Notes
-
A player can only complete one MOU. Multiple registrations will result in disciplinary action.
-
Clubs and players can mutually agree to withdraw an MOU if needed.
-
NSFA provides support to clubs and families throughout the process.

2026 Development Team FAQ
My child received a direct offer - what happens next?
Congratulations! You'll need to complete a short confirmation form and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), plus pay the initial installment to secure your child's spot. Details and deadlines will be provided in your direct offer email.
What is the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)?
The MOU outlines expectations, commitments, and responsibilities for both the player and family for the 2026 season.
How much is the initial instalment and when is it due?
Payment details and due dates will be specified in your direct offer email. This secures your child's position in the team.
Can we decline a direct offer if we change our minds?
Technically yes, but please notify the club as soon as possible so we can offer the spot to another player. Once you've signed the MOU and paid the instalment, withdrawal conditions will apply as outlined in the agreement.
What age group/division will my child be playing in?
This information will be clearly stated in your direct offer email, including the specific team details.
My child didn't receive a direct offer - does this mean they're not good enough?
Not at all! Direct offers are limited, and many excellent players will earn their spots through trials. This is a normal part of the selection process and gives everyone a fair opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.
Do we need to attend all three trial sessions?
While attending all appropriate sessions gives your child the best opportunity to showcase their skills, we understand conflicts may arise. Please attend as many sessions as possible and notify us in advance if your child cannot make a particular session.
What should my child bring to trials?
Full football kit (jersey, shorts, socks, shin pads, boots), water bottle, and a positive attitude. Weather-appropriate clothing is also recommended.
What will be assessed during trials?
Coaches will evaluate technical skills, tactical awareness, physical fitness, attitude, teamwork, and potential for development. We're looking for players who will contribute positively to the team environment.
When will we know the trial results?
Results will be communicated within one week of the final trial session. All families will receive notification regardless of the outcome.
What happens if my child is unsuccessful at trials?
We're committed to helping every player find the right pathway. Unsuccessful trialists will receive information about other opportunities within the club or recommendations for suitable teams/programs.
GENERAL QUESTIONS
Can players trial for multiple age groups?
This depends on eligibility rules and will be addressed case-by-case. Please contact the club to discuss specific circumstances.
What if we're away during trial dates?
Please contact the club immediately to discuss alternative arrangements. Late trials may be possible in exceptional circumstances.
Are there any costs associated with trialling?
Trial sessions are free of charge. Costs only apply once a player is selected and accepts a position.
Can parents watch the trials?
Yes, parents are welcome to observe. However, we ask that you remain in designated areas and refrain from coaching or calling out instructions during sessions.
Can a JDL 2 player that has been offered a JDL 2 spot still get a JDL 1 spot?
Yes, it’s possible, but this depends on the JDL 1 spots available and will be the decision of the coaches team at the trials.
Who can I contact if I have questions not covered here?
: Please email technicaldirector@wpfc.com.au
Is this new NSFA system being used by other clubs?
Yes, this is a Northern Suburbs Football Association initiative being implemented across member clubs to create a fairer and more transparent selection process.
What if my child is currently injured?
Please notify the club immediately. We may be able to arrange alternative assessment methods or defer evaluation until your child has recovered.
Will there be feedback provided after trials?
Yes, we aim to provide constructive feedback to help with your child's ongoing development, regardless of selection outcomes.
